Top Learning Points and Tips from WILL Spring Alumni Forum
SHAMBAUGH had a great turnout at their May 17th WILL Alumni forum. Women leaders from a diversity of organizations were able to cross network and hear from a SHAMBAUGH subject matter expert on the tools and techniques for “Building Your Power Base to Become a Stronger Influencer”
ReCap of Session: While power can be in the eye of the beholder, you can shape this perception in a manner that enhances your ability to influence others.
Think of power sources in 2 ways: Personal Power and Organizational Power
Practical Tips From The Session:
Mary Alice Callahan, a senior consultant led this particular session and engaged the attendees by sharing the following:
Personal Power can be shaped by presence, knowledge, and your ability to communicate well. Each one of those areas you own! As WILL Alumni you developed strategies to improve your presence and make your words count (strengthening your communications skills). Make it your goal to work your ‘presence muscle’ over these next 30 days. Think about how you enter a room and how you interact with others – what ‘image’ do you want people to connect you with?
Organizational Power, while still ‘owned’ by you is built over time and has a few more external factors. Think of Organizational Power as being shaped by your role in the organization, what you are known for, the resources associated with you and your ability to network to get things accomplished.
Let’s focus on ‘what you are known for’… if someone had to describe your contributions in a more colloquial sense, what would they say? Are you a ‘problem solver’, ‘creative strategist’, ‘implementer’, ‘connector’? Each one of these quasi ‘titles’ is reflective of your actions. What do you want to be known for and do your actions reflect this?”
To continue to strengthen your leadership and to stay Off The Sticky Floors, consider these insights and techniques. Let us know what results or progress you make. We look forward at SHAMBAUGH to hear more about any new news or accomplishments you would like to share!
