The Board of Directors for the Unisys Federal Systems Women in Leadership Program invited Rebecca Shambaugh to discuss her recent book, “It’s Not A Glass Ceiling, It’s A Sticky Floor.” More than one-third of Fortune 500 managers are women--yet women represent barely five percent of the top earners among executives. Though more and more businesswomen now occupy positions of power, they are still lagging behind men at the highest levels. This lack of forward motion may have more to do with women's own career-inhibiting behaviors than to cultural impediments.
Rebecca provided an overview of the Sticky Floors - those self-limiting behaviors, assumptions, and beliefs that can stop smart and accomplished women from achieving their career goals, which sometimes include Executive Suite positions. The audience of Unisys professional women was highly engaged, as they gained insight into how to manage the work-life balance, build a “personal board of directors” and mentor or coach women they work with. Rebecca’s keen insight proved that women can get unstuck from the sticky floor. The program was a decided success and the group plans to have Rebecca return for a deep dive session.
