An Exciting Time at SHAMBAUGH Leadership

by Becky Shambaugh

Welcome to the new SHAMBAUGH website. We are entering an exciting time for SHAMBAUGH and the new look is just one of the great things to come. Thanks to the talented team at Viget Labs, and especially to project manager Stephanie Hay who kept us on our toes, for a fresh, inviting and interactive site.

I'm also pleased to share with you the release of my first book, It's Not A Glass Ceiling, It's A Sticky Floor, to be published by McGraw-Hill in early November. The book takes a look at the seven behaviors that hold women back -- and lots of tips and exercises to help them get "unstuck" and reach their full potential. I'm both humbled and delighted by the early reactions. Just this past week, Publishers Weekly reviewed the book and had this say:

Though more businesswomen are in successful positions of power, they are still lagging behind men at the highest levels: more than a third of Fortune 500 managers and more than half of those with multidisciplinary master's degrees are women, yet women hold only 13% of Fortune 500 CEO positions. This lack of forward motion is due more substantially to women's own career-inhibiting behavior than to cultural impediments, Shambaugh claims. Women are more likely than men to shy away from leadership roles, to get bogged down in perfectionism and to avoid career-boosting changes out of a misplaced sense of loyalty. Through a series of exercises and self-appraisals, Shambaugh guides readers with executive suite aspirations through an evaluation of their own behaviors and skills, gauging which serve their ambitions and which are holding them back. Emphasizing strategic relationships, communication and the elements of executive presence, she writes in an encouraging tone with a refreshing lack of blame, making this a satisfying read for women stuck in middle management limbo. (Emphasis mine.)

Thank you for your interest in and encouragement and support of SHAMBAUGH. And stay tuned for more exciting news to come.

Rebecca,

I had the pleasure to hear you speak on the Sprint Campus last week.  I was very impressed!  I have a Master’s in Org Dev and a coaching certificate so everything you presented was music to my ears.

Right now I am in a mid-management role within my company.  While I mentor several women within the company, I am wondering what venues there may be to reach out to growing/new organizations and leadership programs to help pave the way for more female leaders in the MidWest.  Any thoughts?

Thanks so much for your presentation and for being a shining example of a high achieving female leader in business!

Hi Rebecca,

I was pleased to see your book which was published just a few months after mine “A Woman’s Ladder to Success is Paved with Broken Glass Ceilings”

I love the sticky floor concept because so many women do put themselves in their own “stuck” positions.

My leadership fable follows a tale, where if you read the first two pages you see I took the character from graduation from the University through to their ultimate success as an MBA, author and CEO.  I hope you get a chance to look at it and we can compare notes.  I am working, not on Wall Street with the big names like Sprint but with all the women who are left out of the big game and must work every day in cities accross the country to achieve some measure of success in their career and their own mind.  I believe our paths will cross - We need more accomplished women to speak up and allow all women to achieve a voice up the Ladder to Success!

Hello Diane,

Thanks for reaching out and how great that you also have a book out around the same topic area, and that both of our concepts align.  You are right - we need more people out there supporting and advocating a different perspective and view that will inspire women to look within themselves to see what they can actually take hold of and take control of their own career – life goals and destiny.

Keep up the good work!

All the best,
Becky

Becky,

I have seen you speak on the Sprint Campus and it was so nice to get your perspective.  I have been a big propoonent of your theories in my career and mentoring of those around.  Yo go girl!

It’s important for women to understand it’s not just nice boobs that get them to the top!

Becky - I have been reading your book, ‘Sticky Floors’, and have to agree with most everything you say, and with the above reference that important that we woman not use our boobs to get places in the world, although many do.  I plan on myself or someone contacting your organization soon!
Rgds,
Marie

Hi Karen,

How nice of you to reach out and I appreciate you sharing your important and timely perspective for women. As I said in the sticky floors book, the time is now for women while they have the chance to be their own creator in so many ways. So between you, myself and other great women, let’s continue to be the force that is needed to find the right and healthy balance of leadership and helping women to realize - and act - on their potential.

Happy Holidays!

This is so exciting!  I love what you say.  And all this talk of not using your boobs - I think we’re on to something here!

Women hold themselves back by not taking responsibilty for their own actions and needs.  We hold the keys to our own success by being accountable, actionable and empowering ourselves and not riding the backs of others.  And as several have already said, our boobs shouldn’t get us there - mine certainly wouldn’t! ;-)

Great Job Becky!

We, the women of the ILGA stand behind what you are preaching!  And to keep with the theme, our boobs shouldn’t be our path, our minds should!  March on!!

Best,
marie

So interesting. Why are so many women exposing so much cleavage to tempt fate?  At Business Women Speak we have an expression: How long is it acceptable for a man to look at your cleavage before he looks up at your face when communicating?
So, Let’s dress like professional women, show that we can speak professionally in how we look first and then with our voice articulate our message and expect to be respected!

Helen Williams on 12/20  at  04:29 PM:

I agree that we need to speak and be heard, dress appropriately.  Let’s be beautiful people, with a mind, since many of us aren’t blessed with a wonderful body, looks and style.  Use your mind!

Best,
Helen

This is the age of the woman.  Rebecca, your book has many interesting and powerful theories that we should all listen to and use in our everyday personal and professional lives. It is the way to success - at home, at work and at the clubs!  We plan to use your book in our classroom lectures!

A lot of great feedback on your book from the folks at Sprint who participated in your visit to the Sprint campus. I’ve handed out some additional copies to family members, associates. I hear the most about the fact there are practical steps to take. Thanks Becky!

Hi All,

Karen, I got a great response when I spoke at a Pace University, Women at Lubin series Alumni presentation I made in November 2007. Women Breaking the Glass Ceiling appears to be a big issue in the Big Apple.  Many women I met, talented women, women of color with wonderful resumes are being blocked from success by words and influences that feed them negative impressions of their ability to break the glass ceiling.  Hopefully NYU can make some progress, as we did with Women at Lubin at Pace, just a few blocks away, featuring “A Woman’s Ladder to Success”.  I will be in the city at some publicity events in late March, maybe we can connect!
