Executive Coach and Senior Consultant

Biography

Dr. Thorn is a recognized leader in organizational development and human capital management in private, Federal, nonprofit and international organizations. She has over 35 years of experience with organizations, managers, and employees to improve effectiveness in the workplace. Her full-time professional experiences include: the Rehabilitation Administration, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, U.S. General Accountability Office (U.S. G.A.O), Corporation for Public Broadcasting, G.E. Information Services, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

As a Business Advisor, Human Resources Department, at the International Monetary Fund, Dr. Thorn managed organizational and human resources policies and programs in leadership and succession planning, management and organization development, career development, and training. She led senior management committees for change efforts in human capital management programs and services and organizational reviews and restructuring. She was also an internal IMF Management Assessment Center assessor and coach. Dr. Thorn received an IMF Outstanding Achievement Award in 2010.

As a seasoned consultant and coach, she has had extensive experience consulting with organizations’ senior leaders regarding restructuring needs, the identification of change management to meet the changing business needs, and leadership assessment and development. She has extensive knowledge and experience in interpreting a variety of assessment inventories and 360 feedback instruments. Consulting clients include: University Research Company, National Public Radio, Pan-American Health Organization, The Federal Executive Institute, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), and the U.S. G.A.O.

She was a Senior Fellow at the University of Maryland’s James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership and a psychological assessor She is currently an adjunct professor in the MBA program, Executive Development Programs, University of Maryland University College.

Dr. Thorn received her Ph.D. in Human Development with a specialty in Organizational Management from the University of Maryland, 1980, and her M.A. and B.A. degrees, in counseling and psychology from the University of Florida. In addition, she received Executive Development Certification from ESADE Business School, Barcelona, Spain in 2001, and is completing a post-graduate certification in coaching with the College of Executive Coaching. Her professional memberships include: American Psychological Association, Society for Psychologists in Management (Board Member 2006-2009), International Association for Applied Psychology, Society for Human Resource Management, and the Institute for Coaching Professional Association—Harvard

Dr. Thorn’s research and publications include: “Leadership Lessons from Leaders in International Organizations,” “Leadership in an International Organization and Its Impact on Retention: A Case Study, and “Coaching Culturally Diverse Executives.”

She is currently a Cosmos Club member, President-Elect for the Society for Psychologists in Management and on the Board for KBC International Learning, Inc (Learning Centers in Jamaica), the Center fro Progressive Development, Washington, D.C. and the Washington, D.C. Rotary Club.
